Meet Kate Walsh

Twenty-two years ago, when Janet Crawshaw and Jerry Novesky were in the very early stages of creating this magazine, I was doing my own "start-up" in the Hudson Valley. With our first child on the way, my husband and I realized that we would quickly outgrow our Manhattan one-bedroom. So we started looking at homes in the suburbs. Having grown up near lakes in Michigan, living near the water was important to me. Westchester was our first choice, mainly because of the quick and scenic commute to Grand Central via Metro-North. We spent many weekends getting in our beat-up Ford Fiesta and stopping in various Rivertowns, until, finally, we found our "starter home" — which we have never left...

I soon learned that life in the Hudson Valley was about much more than a panoramic train ride into NYC. Weekends during our first fall were spent at Muscoot Farm and Wilkens Orchard. I recall a long conversation with Geoff Thompson at Thompson's Cider Mill about his operation and how it compared to two iconic cideries in Michigan. Talking with local small business owners became a hobby of mine. I wasn't a food or regional magazine journalist yet, but I guess you could say, the seed was planted.

Now as the editor-in-chief of The Valley Table and Hudson Valley, I am able to make a living doing what I love: experiencing and discovering local treasures and getting to know the people who have made theirpassion their livelihood. My co-pilot on the editorial side is senior editor Steve Fowler, who has been in the delicious trenches of the Valley's food scene, as Hudson Valley's dining editor for the past two years. Having just wrapped up our first Hudson Valley Restaurant Week and accompanying events, where we met many new faces and were reaquainted with many more, we are excited about what the coming year and more will bring.
